Here’s Five Top Tips for a Successful Loft Conversion

Integrated Design & Associates Ltd • Oct 04, 2023

Loft conversions are a popular choice for homeowners looking to maximise their living space and add value to their property. Whether you plan to create an extra bedroom, a home office, or a playroom, a loft conversion can be a fantastic investment. Read on as we explore some top tips to help you achieve a successful loft conversion.

Consider the practicalities

There are several factors you should consider before going ahead with any plans for loft conversion. First, you’ll need to evaluate if your loft is actually big enough to be used as a bedroom, home office or study space. If the height of your loft is less than 7ft, it might be an uncomfortable squeeze. If you’re planning on creating a bedroom, you should also check if there’s enough floor space to fit a bed. Another aspect to think about is the requirement to have a suitable fire exit leading from your converted loft. According to health and safety laws, a ladder will not suffice for this - so you’ll need to add a staircase if you do not already have one.

Fix the flooring

While some lofts are carpeted like the rest of the house, many lofts lack sufficient flooring, and even floorboards. From hardboard to soft carpeting, choose from an array of flooring options to find the best fit for your converted loft. You can get this installed professionally or even do it yourself.

Board up walls and add insulation

Any exposed walls will need to be boarded up and sealed. At this stage, it’s a good idea to install insulation. Loft insulation is a cost effective investment to increase energy efficiency and save you money - enjoy a warm, cosy room with reduced energy bills!

Sort out heating and electricity

You will need to ensure your loft room is fully equipped with heating and electricity. It’s wise to avoid trailing extension cords and portable heaters - get sockets and lights wired in to reduce accidents and create a more homely environment. Coupled with loft insulation, radiators and underfloor heating are good options for warming your room. While many lofts have existing electrical facilities, you should check no rewiring and electrical alteration is required.

Hire professionals

While DIY may seem tempting, loft conversions can be complex projects that require expertise in various areas. Hiring professionals such as architects, builders, and electricians ensures that the conversion is done to a high standard and in compliance with regulations. Their experience and knowledge will save you time, money, and potential headaches in the long run.
