The Most Impressive Design Engineering Projects Around The World

Integrated Designs • Sep 20, 2019
Although you may not realise it, engineering is integral to day-to-day life - even yours! Without engineering, we wouldn’t have the roads we drive on, the houses we live in or any of the materials we use at home or at work. Put simply, engineering is the process of using science and reason to build the tools and structures needed in society.

While every engineering project is truly impressive in its own right, there are some which really do blow us away. Across the world, there are thousands of incredible structures and buildings which have had a profound effect on daily commutes, landscapes and even history.

Here we pay tribute to some of the most amazing structural engineering projects around the world and shed some insight into the design and construction process of each.

The London Underground
Whether you live and work in London or you’ve simply visited a couple of times, it’s likely you’ll have whizzed from stop to stop on the Underground, a metro system colloquially referred to as ‘the Tube’. You probably haven’t paid much attention to the Underground in the past, other than to find your way to Oxford Circus or Wimbledon, but it really is one of the world’s most remarkable engineering feats.

After all, following its initial conception in the mid-17th century, the 11 tube lines which make up the underground transport system now carry up to five million tourists and commuters every day. Linking 270 stations in London, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, the Tube now has a sophisticated infrastructure that makes it one of the largest metro systems in the world.

This is all the more impressive when considering the Tube’s early beginnings. Initially, passengers were carried from stop to stop via steam trains, but these were swapped for high-powered electric models during the mid-20th century.

The Colosseum
European countries are home to some of the most incredible structural engineering projects in the world, and it’s fair to say that Italy is no exception. A tour through Italy will open your eyes to some truly remarkable structures, from the Piazza del Duomo of Florence to the floating houses of Venice, but it’s Rome that perhaps takes the top spot.

The Colosseum isn’t just an icon of Italy; it’s widely recognised as one of the world’s most famous and most visited buildings. The construction of the Colosseum began in AD 72, which makes the structure almost 2000 years old. This is particularly impressive when considering the primitive tools the Romans would have used to build it, coupled with its long-standing history of damage at the hands of thieves and natural disasters.

There are some structures that are simply built to stand the test of time, and the Colosseum is clearly one of them!

The Channel Tunnel
As the world’s longest undersea tunnel, the Channel Tunnel, which links England to mainland Europe, has been heralded as one of the most impressive structural engineering projects in the world. Constructing the tunnel took over five years and more than 10,000 people, finally opening to the public in 1994 after the idea of an undersea tunnel was first discussed in the early 19th century.

The construction of the tunnel has transformed the way people travel between the UK and mainland Europe. Today, you can hop on the Eurotunnel and reach Paris from London in a matter of hours, making it much quicker and easier for people to go on holiday or even commute between countries.

The structural integrity of the Channel Tunnel is particularly impressive when considering that the work was carried out underground and below sea level. It took 11 boring machines to complete the project, and in fact, one of these machines has never been recovered. Since opening, the Eurotunnel has enabled millions of people and vehicles to shuttle between England and France, making it a truly spectacular feat of engineering.

The Burj Khalifa
Dubai is renowned for its show-stopping architecture, with a skyline peppered with dramatic skyscrapers and glamorous hotels. From the unique Cayan Tower to the luxurious Burj Al Arab Jumeirah hotel, it’s fair to say that Dubai boasts some of the most impressive design engineering projects in the world.

However, of all the incredible buildings making up Dubai’s iconic skyline, there’s one that dominates them all - the Burj Khalifa. In fact, as the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa dominates every other building on the planet! At 828m tall, the Burj Khalifa is over 200m higher than the next tallest building, the Shanghai Tower, making it one of the most astounding engineering achievements in history.

The tower took six years to build from start to finish, with a unique structure that takes inspiration from the Hymenocallis flower. The Burj Khalifa is now used as a hotel, business building and tourist attraction, and for some lucky residents, can even be called ‘home’.

Palm Islands
As we just touched on, Dubai is home to some of the most impressive design engineering projects in the world. No list of incredible feats of engineering would be quite complete without mention of the Palm Islands, three artificially-constructed islands off the coast of Dubai. Once completed, Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Aku and Deira Island will join The World - another archipelago of artificial islands - near the Dubai shoreline.

These artificial islands have each been produced with sand and rock, and are designed to host private residences and beaches for citizens of the United Arab Emirates. While there have been many environmental concerns surrounding the construction of the islands, there’s no denying that structurally, the artificial archipelagos are monumental.

The Egyptian Pyramids
Shrouded in mystery and allure, the Egyptian Pyramids truly do deserve their place on this list of great engineering achievements. Despite the fact that the Great Pyramid of Giza is heralded as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the architectural significance and historical importance of the pyramids are still celebrated in the modern-day.

Thousands of visitors flock to Giza every year to bear witness to the excellence of the Pyramids, and it’s not difficult to see why. While the techniques employed during the construction of the Pyramids are not known exactly, researchers have spent years trying to figure out how workers built the huge structures without the technology we have today.

It’s acknowledged that construction methods involved thousands of workers pulling huge blocks of stone across the desert, and using a two-way pulley system to heave the materials to the different levels of the Pyramids. These construction techniques may seem unsophisticated in comparison to the methods used by engineers today, however, there’s no denying that the Egyptian Pyramids are nothing short of a masterpiece.

Brooklyn Bridge
There’s something incredibly impressive about bridges; they have to be designed in such a way as to stay suspended across two pylons, while also taking into account the weight of pedestrians and vehicles crossing every day. There are also some bridges which simply look amazing, such as the world-famous Brooklyn Bridge.

Spanning Manhattan and Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Bridge is both a cable-stayed bridge (a bridge supported by cables connecting the deck to the bridge’s pylons) and a suspension bridge (a bridge where cables transfer the load of the weight to the anchorages at the ends). This alone makes it a truly unique and impressive feat of engineering.

After facing a variety of construction challenges, the bridge was first opened to the public in 1883. During its time in operation, the bridge has undergone a number of emergency repairs to ensure its structural stability. However, today the Brooklyn Bridge allows more than 100,000 vehicles across every day, and is widely considered to be one of New York’s most iconic structures
