Things To Consider Before A Loft Conversion

Integrated Designs • Jan 13, 2022

Loft conversions are a great way to add new dimensions to your home along with increasing the value of it. It can create a new bedroom for an expanding family, an upstairs living space, or an office without the distractions of the home. But like with every construction project, it should be carefully thought over before beginning any work.

So read on for things to consider before you begin a loft conversion.

Height & Width

Building regulations specify that a loft roof must be at least 180cm from the floor. However, to be more comfortable it is recommended this be larger. Your loft just might not be suitable for a conversion if it isn’t tall enough. A professional can come in and measure to tell you exactly how much headroom you’ll have once it is converted.

You’ll also want to consider the space you’ll have in the loft once you’re done. Consider requirements like the stairs into the loft and other essential items that need to go in there.

Integrity Of Your Home

Your home as it stands may not be able to cope with the extra weight of a room. You may need to get an expert to check the depth and strength of your foundations, as this will be where the extra weight is carried.

Modern buildings are more likely to be fine with the extra weight, while older structures could struggle. Underpinning is a way that can strengthen your existing foundations so the weight of your loft conversion will be fine.

Lighting

You want to consider the lighting options in your new space. Because of its position, a loft can get a lot of natural light, so you may want to consider installing skylights to maximise the benefits of this. However, you also want to ensure these windows open, as lofts commonly get extremely hot in the summer due to heat rising.

Insulation

Your loft will probably already have insulation in, but if you’re making your loft into a space people will relax, work or live in, you’ll probably need different insulation. You’ll need to ensure the roof, walls and floors are insulated against heat loss and noise, to make it a comfortable space to inhabit.
