What Do Geotechnical Engineering Consultants Do?

Integrated Design & Associates Ltd • Nov 06, 2023

There are many different types of engineers involved in various different industries. From structural engineers to design engineers they are an integral part of our everyday lives. Geotechnical engineering is another branch of engineering involved in the relationship between humans and the earth. It explains the science of the mechanics of soil and rock and its engineering application to the development of humankind.

Here’s what you need to know about geotechnical engineering consultants.

The history of geotechnical engineering

Geotechnical engineering was an approach based on trial and error. Over time, a more scientific method has been applied. Between 1700 and 1900, scientists such as Karl Terzaghi published his findings of fundamental theories on soil mechanics. He was considered to be the father of modern Geotechnics and his book, published in 1925 provided significant findings on the topic. Terzaghi, along with other professionals from 20 countries, founded the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.

What do geotechnical engineers do?

Geotechnical engineering is a branch of civil engineering that uses the principles of soil mechanics and rock mechanics to analyse subsurface conditions. This is essential for many infrastructure projects and the construction of building foundations. Geotechnical engineering largely overlaps with engineering geology, however, geotechnical engineering specialises in engineering instead of geology. Geotechnical consultants are vital for all construction on the ground as soil is a very complex material and being a geotechnical engineer is a very challenging job.

Foundation engineering

One of the key roles of geotechnical engineering is to design foundations that can withstand natural and man-made loads. In order to do this, you need to know the condition of the soil to create the right depth of foundation. Geotechnical investigation is required to determine the soil type. This involves drilling through soil or rock, collecting soil samples and testing them in a laboratory. The test results are analysed by a geotechnical engineer to produce a report and outline the soil and rock properties and groundwater condition. This information allows the geotechnical consultant to design a structure that accommodates these factors.
