Complete an undergraduate degree

The first option is to complete an undergraduate degree in civil engineering. This will most likely be a three-year course if you are studying at a UK university. Once you have completed a bachelor’s degree, you might choose to obtain an honours degree with a more focused approach towards structural engineering.

Complete a master’s degree

If you already have a bachelor’s degree in something similar to engineering, you may not need to do another bachelor’s degree in engineering but instead complete a master’s degree. For most structural engineering roles, it’s important to have a master’s degree in structural engineering. You can research master’s degrees that focus on particular aspects of structural engineering that you are interested in.

Register to qualify

In the UK, must be registered with the Institution of Structural Engineers. You should research appropriate registration procedures as part of your educational experience. It might help to speak to other qualified structural engineers and ask them to be your mentor. They can guide you through the process and help you get started on your career by offering industry advice.
