What To Consider When Hiring An Architect

Integrated Designs • Dec 02, 2021

Trying to figure out the ideal architect to hire can be a big task. They are vital to the success of the project and can help with every step of the process, so picking a bad one could negatively impact you greatly.

Read on for some things to consider when hiring an architect.

Be Prepared

Before hiring an architect, you should prepare your brief. Think of all the key requirements for the project such as how you want to use the space and any specific design choices you want to include. You should know your budget and schedule before you start the project, as these are key details an architect needs to get started on your build.

Location

Make sure the architect lives near to you. You and your architect will work very closely in the early stages of the architectural process, so being close to one another will make planning easy and convenient. By being nearby they will also have a lot of local planning knowledge, such as having relationships with builders and knowing the planning requirements for the specific area.

Previous Projects

Always ask to see a portfolio of previous work to see if it aligns with your project. An architect who mainly works on houses might find a large-scale project out of their comfort zone, and the same with an architect used to bigger projects who you’re trying to hire for a small extension. Looking at their portfolio will also allow you to see their personal style, and you can see if this style matches your own. An architect should be adaptable but their best work is always in their signature style, so only hire an architect whose portfolio you enjoy.

Accreditation & References

Check an architect is fully qualified before you agree to work with them. All architects must be registered with the Architect’s Registration Board and being part of an accredited RIBA Chartered Practise will give you peace of mind that the architect you are working with conforms to proper guidelines on insurance, safety and quality management. Look at reviews of their services to find out if they are a reliable architect. Some will provide references for you that you can check on.
